Later, Blake threw clothes into his bag. Sarah’s eyes skewered him. It felt more intense with every article of clothing he packed. Ever since he got home with Bonnie and Brandi, she’d said nothing. Sarah just stared at him. Followed him into the bedroom like an angry dog ready to fight. Was this all in his head? Damn, how was she supposed to feel? He was back again for less than a day and now he was off again. His heart twisted. “I have to do this.”

Sarah nodded.

He frowned. She knew, but that made no difference. Families in the JANUS program don’t get divorced. They can’t. They know too much. Just the knowledge of its existence was too much. Agents cleaned up the messes of law enforcement or overzealous lawyers, sometimes over-ambitious politicians, all in the name of freedom. Blake sighed. “I won’t let what happened to those people happen to you and the girls.”

“I don’t care. When am I going to get my husband back? I’d see you more if you went to prison instead of coming here!” Sarah cried. “We’re trapped here. My girls are without their father and you do nothing about it. Our neighbor harasses us and you do nothing about it. Even if you did, what’s to stop him from yelling at us when you’re not here, or worse?” Her hands trembled as they recoiled by her side. “At least in the Rangers I had some idea when you were going to come home. Here, I feel like a single mother abandoned by a deadbeat husband.”

Her words pierced his heart. Blake could barely stand. That blow was fatal. His will shattered like a mirror falling onto the floor. “I . . . I’m sorry.” His eyes held back the tears trying to burst out. “I don’t know what to say, except that I love you.”

“I can only pretend to be happy for so long,” Sarah said.

Blake hugged her.

“I can’t live like this.”

He kissed her. If Brian or Heather ever found out about this, how would they react? Would they console her or just make his family disappear? The longer they were in the JANUS program, the more impossible it would become to leave it. Changing names, faces, and digital fingerprints were easy, but not being found by this lot was not. He swallowed. “You know we can’t leave.”

Tears flowed down her cheeks.

“You know we can’t get divorced.” He lowered his voice. “I promise I’ll try to figure something out. But you can’t say this to anyone. You understand? You never know who’s listening.” Blake wiped away her tears. “I know it’s hard now. I love you. Remember that.”

She kissed him. “I know.”

Blake zipped up his bag.

“These people you’re after.”

He looked up.

“Are we in danger? Me and the girls?”

Blake smiled. “No, not if you stay here. There’s no way they’ll find you all the way out here. You’ll be safe.”

“Promise?”

He kissed her again. “I promise. Nothing will happen. After I finish this case, we’ll spend time together as a family.
